A prolific writer, lecturer and world traveler, he was President of the Palmer School of Chiropractic from 1906 until his death in 1961. Being one of the first to realize the potential of radio broadcasting, he became a successful entrepreneur in the radio business in the early part of this century, and also followed the trend with successful enterprises in the early days of television in the 1950's. A self-educated individual, Palmer was involved in over 70 businesses in the latter years of his life. His thoughts and actions stand as proof of how what one thinks, says or does today, may affect the lives of many tomorrow. B.J. Palmer was an example of a self-taught genius who understood and made strong use of the divine power that is within each of us--Innate Intelligence. Throughout his life and within his teachings are examples of how Innate had helped him and instructed him, and how it can help others. As the author of over 70 books, numerous booklets, speeches, research, and various printed material on the science of Chiropractic, Palmer's writings are filled with a unique philosophy of human nature related to a healing profession that matches no other in history Most of B.J.'s philosophy is straight forward, simplistic, extremely educational, and remains timelessly adaptable to many past and present day situations. With that idea in mind, we have presented in this short volume a sample of Palmer's direct but simple thinking as we feel it relates to many topics. These direct extractions from his many writings are from 1904 until his death ,in 1961; many of the words being in his own unique method of spelling. We have assembled these selected excerpts for their relation not only to Chiropractic, but to common topics of interest to anyone who studies truth, the inner spirit, and higher thought; all of which are a part the innate Intelligence within each of us, and the Universal Intelligence that surrounds us. PREFACE Chiropractic Philosophy ought not to be
classed among the luxuries which a poor man cannot afford, hut rather among the
commonest necessaries of life, as air, water and food, which the -B.J.Palmer, 1908
FAITH IN YOURSELF It takes guts, intestinal fortitude, to have a vision and stand by it until it comes true. If you would be a man, not a flunky, do not put on the degrading livery of mental slavery which organizations keep for their members. The man who is true, who has merit, must have his own opinions, must speak his own mind, and Live his own life. People know this and judge accordingly. Stick to your own gifts; insist upon your own talent; be absolutely loyal to yourself don't let others tempt or persuade you to abandon the calling your soul tells you is yours. Be true to your own convictions if you hope to develop the progress in life. The thought, dreams, and aspirations someone else has for you do not belong to you if they conflict with what your intuition tells you is your calling. Don't try to adjust your eyes to another; you can't do it. EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & WISDOM ...What successful man seeks is knowledge and wisdom--and there IS a wide gulf of difference between that and education. EDUCATION is a crude assemblage of a mass of everything human mind stores away thinking there will be a future use for ALL of it. KNOWLEDGE is separation of silver from dross. WISDOM is refining process KNOWLEDGE goes thru, keeping less and less OF EDUCATION to gain more and more OF KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM. Therein lies percentage of successes or failures which ours and all other professions have to contend with. In absence of knowledge, the human mind offers substitutes. In absence of ability, the human mind offers alibis. In absence of facts, the human mind manufactures denials. There are three or four stages of knowing
things. One is education. Education is the EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & WISDOM - p. 2 That which makes health in the
individual--and that is what we work for--is knowledge, because health comes
from inside of patient and works to outside. We look and see not; we listen to voices and hear not the speaking of Infinite Wisdom. We hear sound and interpret it, but we do not comprehend Infinite Wisdom. It is within us all the time. We see no knowledge in the infinite knowledge around us. We look for education, and education is outside of us---a thing somebody else can give us. If you understand yourself you know knowledge, you know wisdom; but you don't understand yourself; physicians don't analyze themselves, do not study and analyze thot they think; do not process the why, how, and when of the beating of the heart within themselves. They look for these things outside, and they find phenomena as a result of phenomenal education. They go thru schools and universities hunting the secret of life, when they have it within themselves but do not understand it. Greatest service we can render mankind, and more particularly people of our profession, is to arouse within yourself a realization of greater Innate within each of you, that Innate may come forth from dark recesses of your understanding of yourself and into and become guiding light of YOUR life. Once YOU grasp this, received, you will pass this on to all you contact. If you do this, your and our life will have been enriched knowing the human race has been bettered for our having lived. What is the mission of Universal Intelligence? To build this world, to keep it builded; to rebuild it when it dies; to keep this world constantly shaping to its highest idealized form. To make, create, or individualize itself into innate Intelligences. Innate Intelligence is a sunbeam, a ray of light from a sum total of lights or sum total of senses. To draw upon the limitless resources and powers of the Innate
Intelligence within and awaken it into action, you must first be sure the
channels of inter-communication are open. If they are, you will have no need to
ask for something that is naturally and rightfully yours, for the Innate
rightfully manifests itself only according to the capabilities of the person.
You must wait patiently while the Innate is assimilating the elements of your
problem, and then goes about its own way and time to work your problems out for
you. You must receive the message from Innate freely and, after understanding it
you must act on it at once. Only by doing so will you make Innate serve you and
continue to respond when you call upon it. You must have positive knowledge in
the power and wisdom of the Innate, and obediently perform seemingly irrelevant
thing. INNATE INTELLIGENCE - p. 2 ...Let Innate flow from within out IN YOU. We ask you to quit
injecting medicines (medi--sins, middle sins) from outside in, in sick people;
so do we ask you to quit injecting errors of omissions and commissions of
education from outside in. As you have opened the portals of a greater inner
Innate world to sick people, so do we ask you to open wide the doors of the
BIGNESS OF THE FELLOW WITHIN you, that it may come forth and make you a greater,
bigger, better fellow from within. Over and above, back and in behind ALL power and its expressions in a body, is "that something" which no man has even seen, felt, tasted, heard or directly sensed--that GREAT UNKNOWN SOURCE--the Universal Intelligence and its fragment of the whole in units--Innate Intelligence. Why should man ignore INTERNAL INNATE INTELLIGENCE HE IS BORN
WITH? INNATE INTELLIGENCE - p.3 WISDOM seeker knows that Innate knows CORRECT answers to ALL human questions; that Innate long ago solved ALL human problems; that Innate lives INSIDE him; that Innate is eager, ready, anxious to tell "education" what it and he needs IF he would listen to and that wee sma' voice that whispers what it alone knows and wants to tell. The work of Innate Intelligence is purely the work of Universal Intelligence. So close are the desires of Innate executed that we would not know there is a Universal mind if it were not that we recognized the sum total of Innate minds and called that Universal Mind. We, as Chiropractors, permit Innate to be personified in man. Purpose of law is us we must look inside for health, life, ease, knowledge, wisdom--these are things we need. We said "permit" Innate to do this---not that we make it possible; we remove an obstruction and Innate works and acts thru man. Truth crushed to the earth will rise again. Truth is its own
best defense, but it does take the average human mind a long time to grasp it.
People who made automobiles had to stand the grief, sarcasm, irony of those who
raised horses. Aeroplane manufacturers took endless abuse from railroad men.
Edison had to take endless scoffs from kerosene people. It always has been thus. Any man worthwhile who does a worthwhile job in a worthwhile cause is never permitted to do so without some has-been, has waser, stick-in-the mud who still believes in oxen, mules, kerosene lamps, and buggies tying to reduce you down to size with criticisms, irony and abuse; But when a man has fought the battle with himself and has come to terms with I truth as he finds it, he is justified in carrying on. Write it on your heart: You can, Yon must, You will We look and see not; have ears and hear not; we have a brain and do not understand, yet EVIDENCE is plain and hammers inside-out for understanding. It whispers and because it doesn't shout, scream and yell, we do not receive it. EVIDENCE to the idealist is a reality; to the theorist a night-mare. Anything which is so complex that when explained to the average mind, they cant grasp, then that complexity is its down fall. Because the average is in the "majority". The more complex the more wrong and impractical because the confused mind that complex a complexity, is in the minority. The more simple, the more truthful and needy. Mr. Ford has introduced one of the simple machines ( The model T)-therefore there is millions in it. TRUTH - p.2 Man, in exaggerated eagerness to go beyond man, wanting to annihilate space, visit the moon, travel miles high, overlooks the undiscovered world within himself, or what makes him tick. He looks for everything outside himself, ignoring the untraveled world within. He unbalances outside world because of dissatisfaction of abnormal unbalances inside himself, trying to account for his unbalanced internal self, blaming the world outside for his inside unbalanced functions. We never know how far reaching some thing we may think, say or do, today, will affect the lives of millions tomorrow. sometimes the heights of visions are only reached by going through the depths of fog. The sun is brightest to him who has lived in darkness, liberty is sweetest to him who has had it restricted; love is only great to him who has endured brutality; only those who can understand vision, who have endured the fighting struggle of a burning desire to get from under a fog. No other torment is so terrible as there is to him who is just sane enough to know it and cannot prove it, but is just insane enough to know it and cannot prevent it. For millions exist in living death; encompassed about in darkness, imprisonment, brutality, and insanity-Amidst their fogs, not knowing there is anything better in life for which to live. If what we say IS expressive of basic reality, which none can dispute or deny, it matters not what may be said against it or how some chiropractors cast it lightly to one side, it will live and some day have its rightful place in a better service to mankind. "God," no matter bow defined, is omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, INSIDE of man in THE CREATION OF MAN. Where is this IN man, if it is IN man at all? If it is, this all pervading INTERNAL power must be recognized and established as a dominant factor in healing WITH man, sick or well. Is it some judgment to revere God on Sunday and deny the "Kingdom of God is within you"other six days of the week? Is this statement orthodoxy or heterodoxy? If so why? If its is admitted to be internal--"NATURE cures"-- how can it medically be denied? WHY is it necessary chiropractors be compelled to reaffirm here and now that which is obvious? Answer is simple! Only because there IS a so-called "scientific" medical profession which calls such a "cult." If such it be, then so be it! A Chiropractor doesn't TREAT anything. He ADJUSTS cause of disease. "Nerves" are a substance. THEY cannot be stimulated or inhibited. If they could, we could work on corpses, for a DEAD man has as many "nerves" as a live one. It is the LIVING mental impulse supply flowing into and thru "nerves" in LIVING bodies that is vital. Pressure upon nerves carrying continuous currents from the Innate Brain to Educated Brain is interfering with proper transmission, anywhere from a fraction of one per cent to ninety-nine per cent of currents. We cannot expect any person, male or female, child or adult, black or white, animal or human, to think one hundred percent thoughts when they are not getting the current to think with. It takes force acting through matter to act thought and, no matter how much your mind wishes, if you have not currents going through that brain you cannot think pure, wholesome thought. I do not look with scorn or contempt upon the person who cannot appreciate Innate's ideal. There is a cause which needs adjusting. I should be his friend. Any Chiropractor who follows medical paths has but one objective in so doing-money is more important than getting sick people well. The supreme use of our ideals is to have a noble purpose and stick to it. First obey your conscience; then the laws made by man. The highest for of obedience is to one's own convictions of right and wrong. Whenever the dictates of conscience conflict with law, disobedience becomes a virtue. It takes guts, intestinal fortitude, to have a vision and stand by that vision until it comes through- ...If you think you CAN'T, and think you CAN'T long
enuf and strong enuf, then you CAN'T because you WON'T. But if you think YOU
CAN, and you think YOU CAN long enuf and strong enuf, then you'll TRY; and in
TRYING, you WILL. SUCCESS comes from hard work, long hours, being sincere, being honest with one's self, looking facts squarely and dealing with them frankly being open in relations with fellow men; thinking ten hours to percolate out one sane, sound, sensible idea in ten minutes. After all, IDEAS are what constitute the foundation upon which the superstructure of every success is built. If one educationally labors long, and no satisfactory solution appears, you will experience frustration. Creative people- writers, artists, composers, research scientists, chiropractors- often feel completely blocked off. If you have this experience, forget the whole business for the time being. Turn to something remote or entirely unrelated. Your education will continue to operate because innate knows you seek an answer. This diversion period will help remove mental and emotional
blocks that have kept Innate from giving you the answer. From diversion comes
illumination. You may be riding on a train, setting on a park bench, walking
down a country road. When suddenly comes that exiting and most rewarding of all
human thrills- Insight. It is one of those so called "mystic glimpses"
into the secret hiding places of all knowledge. A clear and sudden understanding
that has always baffled mankind. Some students think that by going to school, sitting in class
rooms, reading words in books, memorizing words, sentences, paragraphs, rattling
off answers to quizzes, writing exams, squeezing thru state board, opening an
office, hanging diploma on wall, buying shortcut courses here and there, hanging
sign on door--soon multitudes will flock to their offices, stampede inside,
force them to take their money, bank it daily, and soon they can retire rich men
with fame and fortune the fruit of their idleness. None of this is true! . . . The fundamental Basis of Chiropractic, restoration of currents by adjusting spinal buttons and opening windows, is entirely different from the "sciences "of medicine or osteopathy. No medical or osteopathic examining board have a knowledge of the art, science, or philosophy of Chiropractic, therefore if we did apply to the medical or osteopathic boards for a state examination in Chiropractic, they could not give it. They cannot examine things they do not know, and to state that they could or would be greedish and ghoulish bigotry. No chiropractor uses any instruments, tables, medicines, or other apparatus, etc., like any medical or osteopathic man. Any attempt to classify him thereunder is to try to get rid of him from their three cornered field. . . . I have reasons for believing we will do things. Our growth has been phenomenal, and yet not so when you know what we have. How many come to get what we have depends entirely upon what we have to give. If we have something new and good, something the people need, and are not getting, then grow we must. If chiropractic is right, then all the bad our enemies might say against it will not hold it down. If this fundamental principle, now re-discovered, is wrong, then all the good our friends might say will not uphold the idea. OUR PROFESSION – p-2 CHIROPRACTORS are Innate scholars. They think in terms of better men, for a better race; tomorrow, next year and a century hence. A diploma and a license are figments of imagination having little value as compared to what is in their heads, hearts and hands. Our profession needs many more of these. OPPORTUNISTS exist in a groove, floating downstream, drifters; who trail a narrow path in the morning from home to office; in the afternoon from office to home. They live for themselves, their families, their homes only. We have too many of these. CHIROPRACTORS let Innate flow naturally thereby rendering a service of the many for the many for mental exhilaration rewards of honest service well rendered to those needing what they deliver. Our profession needs many more of these. OPPORTUNISTS see a backbone to be punched and punished, someway; somehow, to a mere handful of innocent sick in their offices. They live in an educationally constructed, constricted and restricted shell of "me and my wife, my son John and his wife, we four and no more." They make their little pile, think their work is done, and retire satisfied. We have too many of these. CHIROPRACTORS live in a constantly expanding Innate horizon, uniting with others of like thot to form a fighting phalanx to push back impregnable horizons, to place a living fight where before darkness existed. The farther they travel, the more they do, the greater opportunities for more work are ahead and the steeper grows the mountain of deeds. Their work is never done. There is no time to retire for there is greater work ahead than has been done behind. Our profession needs many more of these. This movement, when universal within our profession and when followed along only Chiropractic lines, will automatically solve our problems. It will develop popular pubic support and that in turn will bring financial aid. Patients will GO TO the Chiropractor rather than having the Chiropractor resort to mixing to beg them to come to him for medical methods. When all sick people know Chiropractic as we Chiropractors know it, our following will be unlimited and our opposition will have nothing to rely upon. What a glorious day THAT will be for the human race. Suppose WE tell THEM OUR PROFESSION – p-3 EVERY Chiropractor should be a part of EVERYTHING going on in HIS profession. He should read ALL publications, every bit of mail coming to his office, study problems, become an active participant in helping shape policies. As it is, "Let George Do It" -and HE seldom IS "George." No wonder there are conflicts, so much turmoil in our ranks. There is an unseen responsibility that surrounds every Chiropractor. He should take his rightful place in assuming his share of numerical, professional, legislative, and financial responsibility. . . . Chiropractic was conceived by my father and developed by me, for one ultimate unselfish life BUYING objective for the sick, and the unselfish health SELLING objective of the chiropractor-TO GET SICK PEOPLE WELL. . . . Some day-it might be RIGHT NOW, maybe tomorrow, maybe next week ... this Chiropractic movement will hit YOU... When it does, YOU will find YOURself. Then YOU will rant and rave and wonder why everybody doesn't see what YOU see, understand what You understand. You will demand that all go farther and faster than the slow education of the masses makes possible. YOU will become as nutty as the rest of us. Then is when we old timers need clamp on the soft pedal and shock-absorbers. Kittering said: "We can send a message around the world in a second and a half, but it takes twenty-five years to get an idea thru one-fourth inch of skull." He was too optimistic! |
